Hello newsletter friends,
Two exciting pieces of news from the land of Headexplodie…
I'm teaching an in person stop motion GIF-making workshop this September!
If you’ve ever wanted to dip your toes into the world of animation and you’re in the Bay Area on Sept 7 - come hang out with me on a Saturday afternoon and learn different techniques for making stop motion GIFs at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley.
No prior experience necessary, I will be teaching simple techniques you can use to start animating and you’ll learn how to export animations as GIFs that you can send to your friends.
This is how I got my start with animation - experimenting with short and sweet simple greetings that I would send to friends and post to their facebook walls (remember when that was a fun thing to do before FB got taken over by weird AI Jesus images????)

Speaking of GIF animations, I'm so proud to share that my work is featured in an academic book that was just released by Bloomsbury Press!
Motion Illustration:
How to Use Animation Techniques to Make Illustrations Move
This means a lot to me. I remember being a student, spending time at the library, poring over whatever books I could find on stop motion to learn techniques and discover contemporary artists using the medium (YouTube tutorials were not as common back then!). I would have loved a book like this as a young animation student.
It also means a lot because when I started, I never quite felt like I fit neatly into any design circles—not animation enough because I wasn’t making short films, not motion graphics enough because I wasn’t interested in graphic design, and not illustration enough because I wasn’t creating still images. I love that author Adam Osgood has put together this book, which shows the nexus of all these categories and includes examples of exercises you can do to practice the art of motion illustration yourself.
Check it out here:
That’s all for now, hope to see a few of you in person at my GIF-making workshop next month!
❤︎,
Annie
